Hello, I’m Thiru Arumugam, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve believed that each of us has a responsibility to contribute to the wellbeing of our community. Over the past 18 years, this belief has guided me through a journey of service, leadership and collaboration, a journey I’d like to share with you today.

My involvement in community service began with a simple desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people around me. In 2009, I founded the Australian Tamil Association to unite our community, celebrate our rich cultural heritage and address shared concerns. The association quickly became a platform for community engagement, and through it, I’ve had the privilege of organising and taking part in countless initiatives aimed at improving lives and fostering social cohesion.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work has been running welfare activities that directly touch people’s lives. From distributing essential supplies to supporting underprivileged families, every initiative has reaffirmed my belief that small actions can create a significant impact. I remember one project where we coordinated volunteers to provide educational resources to children in need. Seeing their eyes light up with curiosity and hope reminded me why community service matters so deeply. These moments are not just memories, they’re the driving force behind my ongoing commitment.

Working within the Australian Labor Party has further strengthened my understanding of service and responsibility. Serving as Secretary of the Toongabbie branch and supporting candidates in Federal, State and Local elections has taught me the importance of patience, teamwork and listening to the voices of our communities. For me, political engagement has never been about personal gain, it has always been about ensuring that policies and programs reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.

Education and empowerment are cornerstones of my approach to community service. I’ve always prioritised initiatives that provide learning opportunities and resources for both students and educators. By creating safe, nurturing and stimulating environments, we can equip young people with the tools they need to succeed. Supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has also been a key focus, as empowering local businesses contributes to economic growth and strengthens community resilience.

Beyond education and economic development, I’m deeply committed to fostering social inclusion and environmental responsibility. Promoting family values, encouraging volunteerism and supporting initiatives for sustainable development are all part of my vision for a cohesive and forward-looking society. Whether it’s organising events to celebrate cultural festivals, engaging with parliamentarians on community issues, or advocating for environmental protection, each effort is a step towards building stronger, more resilient communities.

None of this work would be possible without the support and participation of volunteers, community members and organisations that share the same vision. Collaborating with people who are equally passionate about making a difference has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. Their energy, dedication and insight continually inspire me to innovate and expand the reach of our initiatives.

Reflecting on these years of service, I realise that the essence of community work lies in the connections we form, the trust we build and the hope we inspire. Every project, every campaign and every effort is an opportunity to empower others, foster unity and contribute to a society where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Looking ahead, my commitment to community service remains unwavering. I’ll continue to focus on initiatives that strengthen education, support local businesses, promote social inclusion and protect the environment. More importantly, I’ll keep encouraging others to participate, volunteer and engage because true progress is achieved when we work together.

Community service is not merely an activity; it’s a responsibility, a privilege and a way of life. As I continue this journey, I’m reminded every day that the most lasting impact comes not from individual efforts alone, but from the collective commitment of people who care deeply about making the world a better place. I’m proud to serve, to listen and to act and I invite everyone to join me in this journey of shared responsibility and meaningful change.

Together, we can build a future where we can all be proud of a society where opportunity, compassion and empowerment are available to all. The work continues, the journey goes on, and the possibilities are endless.
